{A Little DIY} Picnic Weights

On a rainy Whiskey Pines Weekend I did a little DIY with my mom and friend Moediz. We sat around the kitchen table during  and made these cute little picnic weights. Unfortunately, my sewing machine broke down early into the process - so we had to sew everything by hand. Nonetheless, it took all day - but I love the outcome!

What you need:

  • Assorted fabric & lining scraps (4 1/2' squares)
  • All-purpose thread
  • Vinyl scraps (3" square)
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Embroidery floss
  • Hand embroidery needle
  • Removable fabric marker
  • Play sand
  • Paper scrap
  • Tape
  • Spoon

Steps: {allow for 1/4" seam allowances}

1. Draw the shapes onto a piece of paper to make the pattern for each weight + the base - but if you want the free patterns, you can find them, here. I drew my own.

2. With wrong sides together, stich two weights, leaving a 2" opening.

3. Roll the paper scrap into a funnel shape; tape. Fill the opening with sand, using the funnel and a spoon. Install the machine zipper foot onto the amchine, and then stich the opening closed.

4. Thread a hand embroidery needle with two strands of embroidery floss. Embroider the faces in the picture above - or make your own like I did!

5. Install the standard machine foot onto the machine. With right sides together, stich the cat perimeter, leaving the lower edge unstiched and a 2" opening along one side edge for turning.

6. With right sides together, pin the vinyl bottom perimeter to the lower edge; stitch. Turn the cat right side out through the side opening. Place the weight inside the bottom. Firmly stuff the cat with fiberfill.

7. Slipstich the opening closed. Pinch the cat to evenly distribute the sand and fiberfill.

8. Host a wonderful picnic and use the weights to hold your blanket down!

{Wedding Wednesday} Be my maid?

I am sooo very excited to be helping Rebecca & Joshua plan their perfect wedding day! Want a refresher about this beautiful bride & groom? Check out their gorg engagement shoot, here

Rebecca had contacted me a while back asking if I knew any creative ideas of how she could ask her friends to be in her wedding party. After looking at some different options, we settled on the "Be My Maid?" DIY idea found on Pinterest.

Here is how ours turned out:

What did Rebecca include in her boxes?

  • A "bridesmaids dress cookie"
  • A Mac Lipgloss
  • Hairstyle Ideas For The Wedding Day
  • A Gift Card To Go Towards Getting Their Hair Done For The Wedding Day

This was such a fun project to work on - but let me tell you - it does take time - so be prepared for that!

You can find wooden boxes, the paint, and ribbon all at Dollarama. You can personalize the inside with whatever you wish. Have fun with it and make it your own.

{Weekend DIY} Dip Dyed

Every weekend I try to do a little DIY. This past weekend I decided to take the challenge of making ombre dip-dyed clothing. I dip dyed a bathing suit cover, t-shirt, some shirts for my manfriendship & some leggings. Next up I'd love to try pillow cases, curtains, and whatever else that is white haha!

Tie dye is pretty addicting. I ended up taking the shorts I was wearing off, bleaching them in javex & vinegar, then I dip dyed them in my tie dye! They look pretty cool if you ask me!

The sky was beautifully ombre at the cottage!Supplies:

  • Fabric Dye
  • Salt
  • T-shirts (or whatever is white that you want to dye!)
  • Buckets (one for each dye colour)
  • Water
  • Latex gloves

There are many ways to acheive the ombre dip-dye technique - but I just winged it. Here is what I did:

  1. First soak your shirt in warm water.
  2. Ring it out.
  3. Hold your shirt by the shoulders and carefully lower into the dye until the colour goes up as high as you would like it. Take it out quickly - don't let it linger.
  4. Repeat step 3 again, but only put the shirt half way in. Let it linger for a minute or 2. Take out.
  5. Repeat step 4 again, but just put the bottom of the shirt in the dye. Let it linger and swish it around a bit. This is the area you want the darkest to achieve that ombre look.
  6. Overall, the dye should go from light to dark or from one shade to the next.

Have fun - bring out your inner fashionista/hippie!
